Today the electric sector has begun deploying utility scale li-ion batteries for energy at short durations, typically 4 hours or less, to help integrate variable renewable energy resources like wind and solar into the grid. Chico Hunter from SRP’s Innovation and Development department will cover this topic and share information on a variety of emerging non-battery storage technologies they are investigating for longer duration storage, in the 8–12-hour range, that might compete with li-ion batteries in the coming years.
